My husband did this after I came out of a coma a couple months ago. It was actually the whiteboard on the hospital wall. But he had Soft Kentuckian T Shirt his name and that he was my husband on it and the names and ages of our kids and where I was and the date. I spent a month in the hospital in a genealogical post-surgery ward in last year’s heat wave and the lady across from me the whole time had early dementia. Was so sad, she was mostly fine during the day.

But at night she was shouting at nurses as her pillows weren’t straight and wetting the bed so they’d come to her and pressing the call bell all night. I tried to help and reassure her and she was grateful to me. She forgot her lunch or to ask for biscuits with her tea so I asked nurse for her. She cried when I left. I wasn’t even meant to be in the ward but they didn’t have Neuro ward I needed. Her Soft Kentuckian T Shirt family did about her calling them at 2 am. I hope they found the help she needed. She didn’t want to get any though as she thought she was ok and was going home.

This is a brilliant idea. Unfortunately it’s not suitable for everyone with dementia. Some will find this distressing and their care should be tailored to their particular needs. My wife keeps a journal and writes down her activities during the day and future activities and events. Seems to be helpful. Really wish we had the whiteboard idea with our dad before he passed away.
Constantly reassuring someone with dementia is exhausting then you get irritable with them, then you go through the guilt it’s a vicious circle that never goes away. To all my Soft Kentuckian T Shirt carer friends in the Uk and families caring for their family, this is a brilliant idea. When I first saw the post about this it reminded me of when my dad had to go into a care home.
